Mumijo
Note Profile
About
Bitter earth, tar and funky animal resin
Scent Profile
Mumijo smells of damp earth and natural tar: heavy, bitter and dark, like asphalt in the ground after rain. A funky, fermented, animal note runs through it, close to hyraceum but more bitter, with a pungent mineral musk. A faint old, sweet resinous undertone sits at the bottom. It is not strong.

Materials That Can Make This Note
Perfumers can build Mumijo from materials such as:
-
2-ethylhexanoic acid sour · musty · fatty
-
P-cresol animal · phenolic · smoky
Smell words come from published sources.
A given perfume with this note may use some of these, or something else.
Origin
Mumijo, also called shilajit, is a dark brown to nearly black resin that seeps from mountain rock. It forms from broken-down plant matter and rock. It is sold mainly as a supplement, and no perfumery supplier was found that lists it as an ingredient.
Usage in Perfumery
A perfumer on the Ouddict forum says it is not intense or interesting enough to use for itself. To evoke it he uses plenty of hyraceum with nagarmotha, bitter vetivers, earthy ouds and a touch of costus and angelica root. A perfume that prints 'mumijo' most likely names this kind of accord or the idea of the resin.
