About
Dried Fallen Leaves is a fantasy accord for autumn leaf litter. There is no extract of it; perfumers build it from dry woods, earthy naturals and a trace of geosmin. Its centre is decomposition rather than foliage, so it smells more of the forest floor than of a leaf.
Scent Profile
Dried Fallen Leaves smells earthy and faintly fungal, like turning over a layer of mulch. A dry, woody body of cedar and bark sits underneath, with a mossy, forest floor character running through it. A thin, dry leaf hay note sits at the edge, and a faint sweetness comes off the decomposing sugars. It reads far less sharp than a living green leaf.

Origin
No plant, no organ, no extraction. The accord is composed from dry woody oils such as cedar and birch bark, patchouli and vetiver for the earth, geosmin at trace level, and tannin-like synthetics for the astringency. The chemistry it imitates is real: as chlorophyll degrades, carotenoid pigments break down and their products include beta-ionone, the molecule behind violet and orris.
Usage in Perfumery
A heart-to-base modifier in autumnal, forest-floor and melancholic compositions. It gives a fragrance a season and a height at once, placing it in November and at ground level, and it supplies the smell of decay without the smell of rot.
