Note Profile
Tree Moss
Treemoss is a mossy-woody fragrance note made from a lichen extract used to evoke damp forest air and bark. In perfumery it is often treated as a natural forest material with earthy, green, and slightly animalic facets.
Treemoss smells dark, damp, and forested, with moss, wet wood, bark, and dry lichen facets. It can read slightly bitter, smoky, and musty, with a muted green edge and a low, earthy hum underneath.
In perfumery, treemoss usually refers to lichen material such as Evernia furfuracea or Pseudevernia furfuracea, extracted from mosses or lichens growing on conifers. It is typically obtained by solvent extraction to produce an absolute or resinoid-like material rather than a distilled oil.
Perfumers use treemoss to add a forest-floor effect, naturalistic depth, and a mossy base in chypre, fougère, woody, and earthy compositions. It blends well with oakmoss styles, vetiver, woods, patchouli, violet leaf, lavender, and animalic musks when a darker natural base is needed.
