About

Ebanol is a Givaudan sandalwood molecule, CAS 67801-20-1. It is a secondary alcohol, 3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-yl)-4-penten-2-ol and its isomers. Givaudan sells it on being a substitute for natural sandalwood oil that is stronger and lasts longer.

Scent Profile

Ebanol smells like a rich, natural sandalwood, giving a strong, lasting sandalwood effect to a blend. Alongside that creamy sandalwood body runs a plainer dry, woody character on its own. A faint clean musk shows through as well, though what kind of musk it is stays unclear.

Origin

Synthetic. Made by Givaudan and sold under the Ebanol trade name. It is one of a group of campholenic-aldehyde-derived sandalwood alcohols that includes Javanol, Polysantol and Sandalore.

Usage in Perfumery

Used at 0.5% to 5% of the fragrance concentrate. Givaudan says it brings volume and elegance to woody accords and a diffusive sandalwood effect. It is highly substantive on all supports and holds three weeks on a blotter, so it is used as a base fixative as well as a sandalwood body.
