Muhuhu
Note Profile
Scent Profile
Muhuhu, also known as African sandalwood, has a dense, woody aroma with earthy, smoky undertones and a subtle leathery nuance. Its scent is dry and robust, lacking the creamy sweetness of true sandalwood, and it can develop a slightly balsamic facet as it dries down.
Origin
Muhuhu oil is distilled from the heartwood of the Brachylaena hutchinsii tree, native to East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania. The wood is harvested and steam distilled to obtain the essential oil used in perfumery.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use Muhuhu primarily as a base note to impart depth and longevity to woody or oriental compositions. It blends well with vetiver, patchouli, and resinous materials, often serving as a sustainable alternative to traditional sandalwood.
