Origin

Cade oil is obtained by destructive distillation of the wood from the Juniperus oxycedrus tree, native to the Mediterranean region. The process involves heating the wood in the absence of air to extract a dark, viscous essential oil rich in phenolic compounds. The resulting oil is filtered and sometimes rectified to reduce harshness before use in perfumery.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use cade primarily in base notes to impart smoky, leathery, and tar-like effects, often in leather, fougere, and woody accords. It pairs well with birch tar, labdanum, vetiver, and patchouli to create depth and a sense of ruggedness. Cade is used sparingly due to its intensity and potential for overpowering other materials.
