Premiere Peau gives both the smell and the feel: 'subtle and powdery, often like freshly baked bread or pastries' and a 'texture like that of fine talcum powder'. Nutty is second and comes from The Perfume Society's 'flour-dusted hands and the nutty warmth of freshly ground grain'. It is set well below powdery because milling releases far less of that warmth than baking does. Below the named facets sit a faint chalky mineral edge, a low sweetness, a soft musk and a dry cereal trace. All four are held under 0.25 with wide spreads, because Premiere Peau contradicts itself inside one short entry. It calls the note 'warm, comforting, soft and slightly sweet' and then says the effect 'depends more on absence - dry, non-sweet, quietly starchy'. That is a source that has not settled whether flour is sweet, so the number stays low and the spread stays wide.

Origin

Flour is wheat or another cereal grain ground to a fine powder. There is no distilled or extracted flour material on the market. No supplier olfactive description sheet for a 'flour' or 'farine' material was found. The note is built as an accord, usually from starchy powdery materials with a light grain nuttiness over them.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a soft base texture rather than a lead. Premiere Peau states the role plainly: 'The powdery softness of flour can also serve to soften sharper or more bold notes.' It sits under gourmand and skin accords and behind bread, biscuit and milk notes, adding dryness where those turn sweet.
