Phenylethyl Alcohol
Note Profile
About
Soft, round, honeyed rose
Scent Profile
Phenylethyl alcohol smells of a mild, warm rose with a honeyed sweetness. It is soft and round, without the green, citrus or spicy edges of a fresh rose. A faint fresh green note sits at the top. At high strength a faint bread-like, yeasty undertone shows through.

Origin
Phenylethyl alcohol (PEA, 2-phenylethanol) is a colourless liquid with a floral odour. It occurs in rose, and Wikipedia records it as a common ingredient in flavours and perfumery when a rose odour is wanted.
Usage in Perfumery
Fraterworks calls it the main material for reconstructions of rose, and Première Peau calls it the single most important molecule in rose perfumery. It is weak for its mass, so it is used at unusually high levels for an aroma chemical. With geraniol, nerol and citronellol it builds a whole rose. On its own it gives a dried red rose.
