French Marigold smells green, sharp and herbal, like crushed leaves, with an anisic, tarragon-like edge. Under that sit a green-mango fruitiness, a light spice and a faint musky, resinous note. At high strength it can read as acrid, medicinal or rubbery. After a few hours it turns softer and warmer, and stays herbal. It carries a juicy, fruity note beneath the green leaf.

Origin
French Marigold is Tagetes patula, an annual in the Asteraceae family. It is native to Mexico and Central America, not France. The oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops and leaves, and an absolute is also made. Its main odour components are limonene, terpinolene, piperitone, piperitenone and dihydrotagetone. Most tagetes oil on the market comes from Tagetes minuta, a different species.
Usage in Perfumery
French Marigold is a heart note. It adds a sharp green-herbal accent to green, herbaceous and aromatic compositions. It is very strong, so perfumers use it in small amounts. It pairs with lavender, basil and galbanum.
