Gallic Rose is Rosa gallica, the old European apothecary rose. Two perfume journals read it the same way: darker, drier and spicier than a damask rose, with a leather edge.

Scent Profile

Gallic Rose smells like a rose, but darker, drier and spicier than a damask rose, in the way old apothecary roses are said to be. A warm spice runs through it. A leathery edge shows in some blends. Underneath sits a dry, austere woodiness, grounded rather than sweet, with the honeyed side of rose held well back compared to a fresh rose. Beneath the petals sits a dry, woody note, like bark, which keeps the rose grounded.

Origin

Rosa gallica is native to southern and central Europe east to Turkey and the Caucasus. Wikipedia calls it 'the Gallic rose, French rose, or rose of Provins' and records it as one of the first roses cultivated in central Europe and a parent of later cultivars. Its flowers are 'fragrant and deep pink'.

Usage in Perfumery
