About

Burnt nutgrass smoke and ash

Scent Profile

Gowé smells of smoke first: burnt roots and ash, dark and warm. Under the smoke is a dry woody, earthy body close to vetiver and cypriol, with a leathery edge, a peppery warmth and a soft powdery texture. It opens fiercely and settles to a quiet, ashen breath. Some extracts add faint hay, myrrh and dried plum.

Origin

Gowé is the roasted tuber of Cyperus rotundus (nutgrass), harvested in Senegal and Mali. The tubers are scorched in fire, pounded and sold as a West African incense. Perfumery grades are alcohol infusions of the roasted roots (Behave, Le Sourceur, infused for at least six months) and an ultrasound extract by CPL Aromas.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use it for a pyrogenic, burnt-wood effect in smoky, leathery and woody accords. It pairs with vetiver, cypriol and agarwood-type bases. It is a new material, used in very few perfumes so far.
