About

Kava drink is the national beverage of Fiji: ground kava root steeped in cold water, nothing else. It smells pungently of wet earth first, then of pepper and raw root, with a nutty edge and a cool tingle that is felt more than smelled.

Scent Profile

Kava Drink smells pungently of wet earth first, close to damp soil or rain washed roots. A peppery kick follows behind the earth rather than leading it. A nutty note runs through it, like cashews crushed into loam. It carries a muddy, herbal quality close to matcha, and a cool, menthol like tingle that is felt on the tongue more than smelled.

Origin

Cold water and the ground root of Piper methysticum, a Pacific shrub in the same family as black pepper. There is no solvent and no heat, so the drink carries what cold water pulls out of the root plus the suspended root powder itself. That makes it a different material from the CO2 extract behind the published kava-kava note. A grower on Kava Forums draws the same line: the smell of the standing plant 'is not like it tastes, it is a flavour all its own'. Vendor and community writing about the finished bowl converges on earth and pepper, and diverges after that by cultivar.

Usage in Perfumery

One Fragrantica attestation and no Parfumo placements. Fragrantica publishes this and kava-kava as separate terms, and the published kava-kava note already states that the beverage is not that note. Use it where a composition wants the muddy, rooty bowl rather than a clean peppery extract: it is dirtier, cooler and nuttier than kava-kava, and less sharp.
