About

Latex is a reconstructed accord, not an extract. The core is the sulphurous rubberiness of a vulcanised product, kept polished rather than burnt. Underneath it the accord drifts to musk. Premiere Peau's own timeline ends on 'soft, glossy, musky warmth' and then 'a subtle, smooth, synthetic-musky residue'.

Scent Profile

Latex smells of vulcanised rubber, sulphurous and slightly sweet rather than raw or burnt. It settles into a soft, musky warmth by the drydown, closer to a synthetic musk residue than to the rubber it started as. A leather-like edge runs through it, and a milky, lactonic softness gives it a rounded, almost sensual feel. A sleek, slightly metallic mineral quality sits underneath, keeping it polished rather than industrial.

Origin

Nothing is extracted. Natural rubber latex is the milky sap of Hevea brasiliensis, and Premiere Peau states plainly that it is not extracted for perfumery. Premiere Peau also separates the raw sap from the finished product and says the two smell different: the sap is mildly sweet, sappy and faintly ammonia-like, while processed rubber gets its character from sulphur vulcanisation compounds. The perfumery note is built to the processed side. Construction is given only in general terms, as certain esters, traces of sulphurous materials and glossy musk-like materials. Scentspiracy lists benzothiazole as a main material for industrial leather, latex, neoprene and asphalt accords, at 10-500 ppm.

An avant-garde accent.
