Latte macchiato is milk marked with coffee, the reverse of caffe macchiato. Espresso is poured into a tall glass of hot frothed milk, often half a shot or less, so the drink stays layered and the first sips are mostly milk. In perfumery the accord is milk-led and sweet, with roasted coffee sitting behind rather than in front. It carries more milk and less coffee than caffe latte.

Scent Profile

Lactonic milk dominates, warmer and fuller than plain milk because the milk is steamed and foamed. A sweet vanillic tone sits just under it, which is why every source calls this the sweeter of the pair. Roasted coffee and cacao come third, present but held back. Traces of clean musk from the foam and a faint roasted-nut tone complete it. There is almost no smoke.

Origin

An Italian preparation. Macchiato means stained. Here the stain is the coffee. The milk goes into the glass first, the espresso is poured through the foam afterwards, and the drink is not stirred. About one espresso to 200-250 ml of milk. There is no perfumery material behind this note. It is a reconstruction, built from milk lactones, cream and vanillic sweeteners with a light coffee base.

Usage in Perfumery

A base accord for milky gourmand work. It gives the creamy, sweet, faintly roasted volume of a milk drink without the coffee mass of an espresso accord. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, caramel, hazelnut and white chocolate. Use caffe-macchiato when the coffee must lead instead.
