Geosmin is the characteristic odorant of petrichor and so of the baked-earth distillate; the attar itself, a clay distillate in sandalwood, is not a material we hold.

How the layers join

Origin

Made at Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh by distilling baked clay - discs of the local earth, fired and then hydro-distilled - into a receiver of sandalwood oil. It is the only major perfumery material whose raw material is soil rather than a plant or animal.

Usage in Perfumery

The reference material for a petrichor accord, and a base note in Indian attar perfumery. Its sandalwood carrier means it brings a creamy wood alongside the earth.
