About

Peat forms from partly decomposed plant material in waterlogged bogs and moors. Its essence is obtained by distilling or extracting peat moss or soil, sometimes as a by-product of whisky making. It smells deeply earthy and smoky, like damp soil, moss and charred wood, with a cold, acidic bog-water tang. An antiseptic, medicinal phenol runs beneath. It mellows to a persistent, grounding richness.

Scent Profile

Peat has a deeply earthy, smoky aroma with nuances of damp soil, moss, and charred wood. Its scent can evoke the atmosphere of a misty bog or the lingering smoke of a distant fire, with the cold acidic tang and mineral undertones of ancient bog water. Under the smoke sits the phenol itself: guaiacol, syringol and the cresols, antiseptic and medicinal whether or not anything has burned. Over time, it mellows to reveal a persistent, grounding richness.
