About

Green hojari resin from Boswellia sacra. Candied lemon and honey over resin, and no church smoke.

Scent Profile

Omani Green Frankincense smells fresh, warm and resinous, dry rather than sweet-heavy, a brighter and less churchy grade than most frankincense. A candied lemon citrus top runs over it, closer to lime and verbena than to orange. It is the greenest grade of the resin, and a honeyed warmth, like golden honey, sets it apart from every other frankincense. A sweet-woody, balsamic dryness sits underneath, with a faint fruity, unripe-apple note and a touch of pepper.

Origin

Steam-distilled from the green resin grade of Boswellia sacra, tapped in Oman. Hermitage Oils describes the input as 'the ultra-prized GREEN Omani resin' and the oil it gives as 'golden yellow in colour'. The species matters and is measured. ScenTree reports B. sacra from Oman and Yemen with under 40% alpha-pinene and limonene in its oil, against Boswellia papyrifera from Ethiopia and Eritrea at around 50%. Those are different species with different chemotypes, so this is not the published ethiopian-frankincense under another name. Mermade Magickal Arts, quoting the trade, records that 'Green Hougary is the most sought after of all' grades.

Usage in Perfumery

Base note. Attested on Parfumo in 13 placements across 5 brands, with no Fragrantica page. Perfumers buy this grade instead of ordinary olibanum when they want the resin without the incense-burner association. A Hermitage reviewer calls it 'the anti-church version of frankincense, not smelling much like the traditional Catholic frankincense'. It sits with citrus, pine and pepper on the bright side and with amber and soft woods underneath.
