Orange Tree
Note Profile
About
Orange tree is the whole plant, not one part of it: blossom, leaf and twig, peel and wood together. Nobody distils an orange tree. Perfumers build the note by combining the several materials the tree actually yields, so it smells of citrus and crushed leaf first and of flower and wood underneath.
Scent Profile
Orange Tree smells of citrus and crushed leaf first, with flower and wood underneath, since it is built from the whole plant rather than one part. The green, twiggy leaf oil anchors the whole thing. A honeyed, narcotic blossom note sits behind the citrus, softer and less sharp than plain orange blossom. A bitter, herbal woodiness runs through it too, with a plain floral note and a soft, dry wood base holding it all together.

Read off the wheel, not a label applied to the note.
Origin
Citrus aurantium and its sweet-orange relatives. Premiere Peau's orange blossom entry sets out the anatomy: bitter orange yields four separate materials - neroli oil, orange blossom absolute, orange blossom water absolute and petitgrain oil - and says combining them is how a perfumer reconstructs the complete portrait of the living tree. Peel oils from sweet orange, mandarin, clementine and blood orange are added on top of that.
Usage in Perfumery
Attested on 10 Parfumo perfumes across 10 brands. Two are worth naming. 4160 Tuesdays' The Orange Tree lists orange flower, sweet orange, mandarin, clementine, blood orange, petitgrain and woods, and a reviewer calls it 'full and complete... from roots to fruit'. Hermes Eau d'Orange Verte formally lists Orange, Tree moss, Mint and Woody notes.
