About

Pansy is defined against violet and always downward. The one source that treats it as a fragrance material says the same thing three times in different words: a smaller, quieter version of violet, less sweet, more leafy, with an earthy root-like undertone, and that the ionone is a whisper rather than a statement. So the vector puts green first and floral second, which is the reverse of published violet. It is a fantasy accord. No pansy oil or absolute is sold.

Scent Profile

Green leads. It is the leafy quality the source names in every one of its three descriptions and the cis-3-hexenol in the stated construction. Floral is second and deliberately kept below green: the ionone is there but the source calls it restrained, a whisper rather than a statement. Powdery is third, from the waxy-powdery softness and the trace of orris in the build. Earthy carries the root-like, garden-bed undertone of a plant close to the soil. Below the line, small amounts of dry_woody, fruity and sweet_vanillic cover the ordinary ionone tail, but they are held down because the source is explicit that this note never becomes sweet.

Origin

Pansy is Viola tricolor and the Viola x wittrockiana garden hybrids, the same genus that yields violet leaf absolute. The source states that no commercial pansy essential oil or absolute exists and the note is entirely synthetic, built from alpha-isomethyl ionone for the green-violet character, cis-3-hexenol for the green leaf, and a trace of orris-type powderiness. The flower's own scent is called mild and inconsistent across varieties, with modern cultivars bred for looks having lost most of what wild heartsease carried. Hermitage Oils confirms the genus link from the trade side, noting that Viola is best known as pansies in most gardens.

Usage in Perfumery

A green-violet modifier in the heart. The source places it in garden, green-floral and cottage-style compositions, and says it gives a garden-flower reference more humble than violet itself. 22 Fragrantica placements and 4 Parfumo across 4 brands. Fragrantica files it under Flowers.
