About

Papua oud is agarwood oil distilled from wild Aquilaria harvested in Papua New Guinea. It has no settled profile. Three distillers describe three different oils, and the trade blames the harvest method for it.

Scent Profile

Dry_woody is the base all three sources build on, and it is the only part of this note that is reliable. Amber_resinous is next, because every source leads with resin: 'solid and resinous' from Al Shareef Oudh, 'a soul-stirring resinous aroma' from Ensar Oud. Earthy carries Ensar's 'earthier than any Malay' and AromaSublime's 'whispers of petrichor and damp black soil'. Above that base the sources stop agreeing and the spreads say so. Fruity and tropical are Al Shareef Oudh's opening, 'a lovely mango peel note blending with unripe bananas', with AromaSublime's 'ripe black grapes' in the drydown behind it. Warm_spice and aromatic_herbal are AromaSublime alone: 'fennel root and fennel seed, marjoram, black liquorice, star anise, nutmeg, cassia, vanilla bourbon, and bright Chinese cinnamon'. Fennel, marjoram and anise sit in aromatic_herbal, nutmeg, cassia and cinnamon in warm_spice. Smoky is the incense reading, 'wafts of incense unfurl as though you have lit a khaleeji bakhoor'. Aquatic_ozonic is Al Shareef Oudh's 'oceanic brightness', supported at a distance by the petrichor and 'distant thunderstorm' of the third source. Sweet_vanillic is the drydown of 'expanding burnt sugar, creme brulee'. Under the line sit leather from 'new wood and natural leather wait patiently at the base', a light mineral reading of the petrichor, a small animalic value for the swampy character of badly recovered wood, green for the unripe banana, and traces of honeyed, fresh_spice, creamy_woody, mossy_chypre and sour.

Origin

Wild agarwood from Papua New Guinea, distilled in small batches. Al Shareef Oudh says the region's wood is often 'recovered incorrectly from the bottom of lakes' and that most batches it has seen carry 'the swampy smell they hold due to incorrect handling'. The batches that are handled well are described as 'solid and resinous'. Ensar Oud sells decades-old stock of the same origin as 'virgin Papua New Guinean gaharu'.

Usage in Perfumery

Attested on 24 Parfumo perfumes across 5 brands. Not on Fragrantica as a separate note. Sold mainly as pure oil by oud specialists rather than as a house material, and no fragrance house publishes a reference standard for it.
