About

The flower of the pomelo, Citrus grandis, the largest citrus and a parent of the grapefruit. The one publisher that describes it calls it 'sweet, gentle, and pure' and 'deep and richly floral'. Honey runs under the flower and a green leaf-and-branch note runs over it. It is not the fruit. The bright peel note published as pomelo shares nothing with it but the plant.

Scent Profile

Pomelo Blossom smells sweet, gentle and richly floral, a large white citrus flower with more roundness and depth than neroli. A honeyed sweetness runs underneath, rich rather than faint. A green note of leaves and branches sits over the top, more freshness than sharpness. It carries only a touch of citrus crispness, nothing like the bright peel of the fruit.

Origin

Citrus grandis (also written Citrus maxima), grown across southern China and southeast Asia. The blossom is a large white citrus flower. Areme, a Japanese fragrance house, publishes two articles on the material and treats it as an extractable flower in the same family as neroli, which is distilled from the bitter orange, Citrus aurantium. No supplier datasheet, yield figure or extraction method was found for a pomelo blossom oil or absolute.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a heart note in the same place a citrus blossom usually goes, but for weight rather than lift. Areme's own comparison sets out the choice a perfumer makes: neroli is 'bright, uplifting, and elegant', pomelo blossom 'tends to have greater depth and a more rounded floral intensity'. The publisher describes the effect as 'soft and lingering, not overwhelming but subtly enchanting'.
