Roseroot
Note Profile
About
Dry rose over damp earth
Scent Profile
Roseroot smells of rose, but a thin, dry rose with none of the honeyed richness of the flower. The rose sits on an earthy base like a damp forest floor. A green, herbal shade runs through it, and a faint spicy warmth shows at the back.

Materials That Can Make This Note

-
Geraniol rose · floral · citrus
Smell words come from published sources.
Allergens perfumes with this note can list: Geraniol, Benzyl alcohol, Geranyl Acetate
A given perfume with this note may use some of these, or something else, and may or may not contain the allergens above.
Origin
Roseroot is the root, or rhizome, of Rhodiola rosea, a succulent of cold mountain and Arctic regions. A very small amount of essential oil is steam-distilled from the root. Its rose-like odour comes mainly from geraniol and phenethyl alcohol. The yield is very low, so most perfumes that name roseroot use a reconstruction.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it as a heart note that joins herbal-green notes to a rose heart. It gives a rosy effect without the sweetness of rose absolute. It also fits adaptogen-themed cosmetic and aromatherapy products.
