Hot dry wood and heat, not wet air. A constructed scene note built from cedar and other heated woods with a resinous frame. The steam in the name is rendered as heat on timber, not as moisture.

Scent Profile

Dry_woody is the note and both sources lead with it. The Scent Base says 'hot dry cedar', and the Boy Smells pyramid calls itself 'woody, earthy' and names steamed woods in the base. Amber_resinous is the frame: three of the six materials in the Boy Smells pyramid are resins or resinous woods, elemi, labdanum and palo santo, and the aggregator's own list ends in warm spicy. Earthy is stated by one source as a headline word, 'woody, earthy', and supported by patchouli sitting in that pyramid's heart. Aromatic_herbal is clary sage in the same pyramid and the word aromatic in the aggregator's accord list. Warm_spice is named directly by the aggregator. Below sit fresh_spice, also named by the aggregator, smoky, mineral, cooling_mentholic, aquatic_ozonic and mossy_chypre. Smoky and mineral are the scorer's reading of a hot stove and hot stones and NO SOURCE STATES EITHER, so both carry the widest spreads in the vector and a reviewer can move them cheaply. Aquatic_ozonic is deliberately near the floor: the sources describe heat on wood, so scoring the steam as humidity would contradict them, but zeroing it would assert an absence nobody stated.

Origin

No material and no plant. Sauna is an abstract note that houses build to place a scene. The Scent Base files it under Molecules, Minerals & Curiosities and describes it as 'hot dry cedar and steam'. Boy Smells builds its Sauna candle from clary sage and elemi on top, patchouli and labdanum in the middle, and steamed woods and palo santo underneath. Both readings are wood-led with a resin frame and neither uses a green or aquatic material.

Usage in Perfumery

Used to set a room rather than to carry a fragrance. The Scent Base says it 'serves as a foundation for woody, aromatic, fresh spicy and warm spicy accords', which puts it under the composition rather than on top of it. Attested on 3 Fragrantica perfumes and no Parfumo perfumes.
