A dirty marine note. It is a tidal pool at low tide rather than open water: briny and iodic, with a rubbery organic body underneath that keeps it from reading clean.

Scent Profile

Aquatic_ozonic leads because the source opens with it twice, 'Briny, iodic' and 'Sharp brine and iodine'. Iodine has no facet of its own in this vocabulary, so it is carried here. Mineral is the salt: 'Salty, slightly vegetal, with no sweetness' and 'Faint mineral salt residue on skin'. Animalic is the layer that makes the note itself. The one trade glossary that describes the term calls it a composed effect accord, built from calone, seaweed absolute, ambergris-type materials and trace animalic musks to stand for marine invertebrate life. The same page files it under musk, amber and animalic smells rather than under aquatic notes, which is that source's own signal that the animal layer is structural and not a flourish. The live animal is a background fact in the source, not the referent: handled, it is said to smell mildly briny and slightly sulphurous.

Usage in Perfumery

An effect note in marine and animalic compositions, used to give an aquatic accord organic depth where a clean calone build would read synthetic. The source places it in the heart-to-base range. It works against seaweed, ambergris and salt.
