Note Profile
Timur is a spice note derived from the berries of timur (timut) or Nepal pepper, a Zanthoxylum species from the Himalayan region. In perfumery it offers a vivid fusion of peppery tingling spice with bright, grapefruit-like citrus facets and airy freshness. It is valued for adding lift, zest, and a distinctive, modern twist to spicy and citrus compositions.
The scent of Timur combines a fresh, airy spiciness with a pronounced citrus character reminiscent of grapefruit and lemon. It is more aromatic and less pungent than black pepper, with tingling, slightly salty, and subtly fruity nuances that can recall passionfruit. As it develops, the note moves from sharp, zesty top brightness toward a cleaner, drier woody-spice trail while retaining its distinctive citrus halo.
Timur (also called timut or Nepal pepper) comes from the dried berries of Zanthoxylum armatum and related Zanthoxylum species native to the foothills of the Himalayas, especially Nepal. The berries are typically hand-harvested from wild or cultivated shrubs or small trees and then dried. In perfumery, timur pepper oil is obtained mainly by steam distillation of the dried berries, yielding an essential oil rich in molecules such as linalool, limonene, methyl cinnamate, and sanshool derivatives that contribute to its citrus-floral and tingling facets.
Perfumers use Timur primarily as a top-note spice to inject brightness, effervescence, and a modern twist into citrus, aromatic, and woody compositions. It can substitute or complement black and pink pepper when a lighter, more grapefruit-like and less pungent effect is desired, and it pairs especially well with citrus fruits, cardamom, and dry woods. Its distinctive, tingling freshness makes it popular in niche fragrances seeking contrast and texture in the opening while remaining transparent enough not to overwhelm floral or woody hearts.
