About

Yuzu-bright, sharp conifer

Scent Profile

Torreya smells of green citrus close to yuzu peel, sharp and not sweet. Underneath runs a pungent, coniferous sting, like pine resin. The citrus fades over a few hours and leaves a warm, resinous, woody conifer. It is an unusual mix: a conifer that smells partly of citrus.

Origin

Torreya is Torreya nucifera, the Japanese nutmeg yew or kaya, a conifer. Its leaf, fruit pulp and seed hold essential oils, and the leaf oil is rich in alpha-pinene, 3-carene and limonene. No widely traded commercial oil exists, so it is a niche, artisanal material.

Usage in Perfumery

It is rarely used and reads as specifically Japanese. Perfumers who use it want a green, yuzu-like citrus with a pine-resin body in one material. It works as a heart note, with the citrus fading to a resinous conifer.
