Sharply medicinal and camphoraceous, with a green, almost sappy freshness over a thin resinous base. The opening reads clean and antiseptic rather than pleasant, and that carbolic, medicine-cabinet quality is the most-attested thing about the material. It is camphoraceous but less icy and less mentholated than eucalyptus. On dilution the harsh camphor recedes and a softer herbal-green character holds.

Origin

Tea tree is steam distilled from the leaves and terminal branchlets of Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree endemic to a restricted area of coastal New South Wales, Australia. Terpinen-4-ol is the dominant constituent and the one the Australian standard specifies.

Usage in Perfumery

Used sparingly, for a clean medicinal lift in fougere and aromatic accords rather than for beauty. Its association with antiseptics makes it difficult to place in fine fragrance, and most compositions prefer its softer relatives.
