Tropicalone is Mane's registered name for gamma-undecenolactone, an unsaturated gamma-lactone. Its patent calls it pineapple flesh made lactonic and very powerful, with coconut and passion fruit behind it and a milky, fatty sweetness that grows when it is dosed in a sweetened base. It is a lactone that reads as tropical fruit rather than as peach.

Scent Profile

Tropical and lactonic lead together, because the patent's own constant across every test medium is 'ananas chair tres naturel, lactonique et tres puissant' - very natural pineapple flesh, lactonic, very powerful - with coconut and passion fruit named alongside. Fruity carries the more general 'woody and fruity note very different from that given by any other lactone'. Sweet_vanillic is the sweetened-base face of the same molecule: 'tres gras, sucre, doux' and 'tendance lait concentre'. Creamy_woody and dry_woody split the patent's own 'plus boisee', held low because the woody claim sits oddly next to pineapple and coconut and no second source resolves it. Aldehydic records the phrase 'aldehydee lactonique' directly.

Synthetic. Mane V. Fils SA patented the molecule and its use (US20080125345A1, EP1806979B1, inventors Zucca and Mane) and registered the trademark Tropicalone for gamma-undecenolactone. It is a flavour and fragrance material, not an extract.

Usage in Perfumery

Rare as a listed note. Fragrantica records two placements and files it under fruits, vegetables and nuts. Its patent claims cover flavour use as much as perfumery, and the worked examples dose it at 10 ppm in water.
