Walnut wood is Juglans timber, and it is a quiet note. Both sources describe a faint, mild smell that shows up while the wood is being cut or sanded and is not noticeable otherwise. What is there is dry wood with a light nutty edge and a little earth.

Two independent sources agreeing the smell is weak is evidence, so the facet is held down rather than rounded up to the 0.62 that acacia, balsa and almond tree wood carry. Origin

The timber of trees in the genus Juglans, most often J. nigra in North America and J. regia in Europe. The Wood Database records that black walnut 'has a faint, mild odor when being worked' and that the odour is shared across most Juglans species except butternut, which makes it usable to tell walnut from lookalike timbers. No supplier lists a walnut wood essential oil or extract, and no manufacturer publishes an olfactive description, so both sources here describe solid worked timber rather than a perfumery raw material.

A base wood for texture rather than for smell. Use it where a composition needs a wood that reads as furniture and warmth without adding volume, under nut, tobacco, vanilla and soft leather.
