Montblanc Explorer, launched in 2019, opens with a bright bergamot, pink pepper and clary sage combination, moves through a leather-vetiver heart, and settles into a woody, slightly sweet base of ambroxan, patchouli and cacao pod - a well-regarded, office-friendly designer fragrance often praised for punching above its price point. Clean Shaven's dupe is a reasonably close match on paper, with a citrus-pepper opening that leads into a woody-leather middle in the same general shape as the original. The gap shows up in staying power and richness - Montblanc's vetiver and leather accord has a real earthiness that develops over a couple of hours, and here it's thinner and settles faster into a simpler ambroxan-woody base without the cacao pod's subtle sweetness coming through clearly. Projection is also noticeably lower; where the original creates a modest scent bubble for the first couple of hours, this stays close to the skin from the start. It's a fine everyday, budget option for the office or a casual outing where a woody-citrus scent is wanted without close scrutiny, but it doesn't reach the sophistication or the wear time of the real Explorer.
