Inspired by Invictus

Inspired by Invictus is Match Fragrances' budget reading of Paco Rabanne's 2013 Invictus, the Veronique Nyberg, Anne Flipo, Olivier Polge and Dominique Ropion grapefruit-marine-ambergris composition that became Rabanne's sport-masculine flagship. Match's pyramid mirrors the original community pyramid: grapefruit, marine notes and mandarin on top, a bay leaf-hedione-jasmine heart, and an ambergris-guaiac wood-oakmoss-patchouli base. The first hour is the strongest match: grapefruit and marine notes lift bright with mandarin adding the citrus warmth, and the trademark fresh-marine-citrus impression arriving within minutes. By the heart the bay leaf carries the aromatic backbone with hedione (the synthetic jasmine molecule) lifting the floral edge. The dry-down trades on ambergris as the salty-amber anchor, with guaiac wood, oakmoss and patchouli rounding the green-woody close. Performance is the budget compromise: four to six hours of moderate sillage. The character is fresh-marine-amber sport-masculine, with spring through autumn the natural seasons and sport, casual, office, and date the natural settings. The honest caveat: at fifty millilitres for under thirty pounds, the Rabanne's polished marine-ambergris depth is softened here. Sits next to other budget marine-sport dupes in the dupe-house neighbourhood, while the original sits with Acqua di Gio, Bleu de Chanel, and the broader marine-sport designer-masculine conversation.
