Clear Substance opens with a cool, slightly spicy shimmer of labdanum, violet leaf and Sichuan pepper before unfolding into its heart: a clean, soapy rose underpinned by scrubbed orange blossom and a touch of patchouli. This is Perfume Parlour's reading of Clinique's Aromatics in White (2014), a fragrance prized for taking the famous Aromatics Elixir and brightening it into something milky, powdery and almost incense-like. The dupe captures that sheer, clean-rose character convincingly, though the rose here reads a fraction more synthetic and the composition flatter, without quite the watery-ambergris depth of the original. The drydown settles onto a soft amber, benzoin, vanilla and musk - powdery, warm and easy to wear. Longevity is moderate rather than long, sitting close to the skin after a few hours. Its refined, soapy elegance suits cooler weather and milder spring days, and it works comfortably from the office to evening wear.
