German Ruby interprets Hugo Boss Hugo Red, a fresh amber-spicy masculine from 2013. It opens with a zesty, slightly spicy burst of grapefruit lifted by pink pepper, a cool metallic edge and green galbanum, giving an almost ozonic freshness. The heart turns fruity with juicy pineapple and tart rhubarb over a discreet cedar backbone. The drydown is a soft warmth of tonka bean and amber. Against the original, this Perfume Parlour version captures the grapefruit-and-pineapple signature convincingly but renders the ozonic-metallic facet flatter and the warm amber-tonka base lighter - it loses a touch of the original's smooth polish. Longevity is moderate, in line with the original which settles into a skin scent after five or six hours, with reasonable, close-wearing projection. It is a fresh, energetic fruity-citrus masculine for warm spring and summer days, casual and sporty wear and the office - a wallet-friendly route to that easygoing Hugo Red freshness.
