Alto Astral - 809

The Essence Vault's No. 809 is a close structural echo of Byredo's Alto Astral, right down to the sparkling aldehyde-and-coconut-water opening that gives the original its sense of luminous, sun-drenched optimism. That opening is genuinely one of the more accurate reproductions in this range - the effervescent, creamy freshness is there from the first spray. The heart moves through jasmine, incense, and musk to chase Alto Astral's soft, 'skin-like' comfort, though it's noticeably less blended here, with the individual notes staying more separate rather than melting into the original's cohesive, cloud-like texture. The base of sandalwood and amber goes for that salted-amber warmth Byredo built the scent around, but comes across simpler and less resinous, fading into a plain sweet amber musk rather than sustaining the original's elegant, sun-kissed depth. Still, for a playful spring or summer scent with a genuinely accurate opening, No. 809 punches above its price point, even if the back half doesn't hold up to the niche original.
