No. 181 opens with the same invigorating mint and aromatic lavender that has defined Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Male since its launch, before settling into a vanilla-tonka base. The initial contrast between cool mint and warm vanilla is a fair echo of the original's signature tension, but the mint here dissipates more quickly, and the lavender reads thinner rather than the fuller aromatic-fougere accord Le Male is built on. The vanilla-tonka base leans sweeter and more one-dimensional, missing some of the original's balancing dryness. Performance is decent for a budget fragrance, holding a soft vanilla-sweet trail for a few hours, but falls short of Le Male's excellent longevity and sillage. It captures the comforting, classic mood of the icon well enough for casual wear, though fans of the original will notice the shortcuts.
