About
Richard Howard is a British perfumer, known publicly as the nose behind GROVE England, the Cotswolds fine-fragrance house founded by the interior designer Laura Butler-Madden. He composed the house's debut, Anemone, to an unusual brief: build a fragrance for a flower that has almost no scent of its own, using the rest of the garden to suggest what it might smell like. Editorial coverage of the brand describes the collaboration as iterative and unhurried rather than a clinical technical exercise. He keeps a low public profile. GROVE's own copy credits him only as "a British master perfumer", and his name appears in press coverage of the brand rather than in any marketing of his own, so his wider body of work is not well documented. On that basis we credit him with the GROVE range as a whole, since the house states that each of its fragrances was crafted with the same British master perfumer, though only Anemone is named to him directly in print.
