Barbour

Barbour is a British heritage brand founded by John Barbour in 1894 in South Shields, England, originally focused on oilskin and waxed outerwear for mariners and country workers. Over the 20th century it became closely associated with British country life, and its wax jackets and quilted coats are now a staple of the brand’s identity.

Barbour’s move into fragrance is a recent chapter. According to coverage in T3 and listings on Fragrantica, the company formally extended into perfumes in 2015 with the launch of its Heritage and Coastal lines, followed by Barbour For Him and For Her. These early releases leaned into themes of the British countryside and coastline, mirroring the imagery of the clothing line. Bottles typically carry the Barbour logo and tartan details that reference the brand’s textile heritage.

Since 2015 Barbour has expanded the range with flankers and collections such as Barbour Coastal for Her, Barbour Heritage for Him and Her, and the Barbour Origins duo launched in December 2023. The Origins scents are described in T3 as woody, warm and seasonally inspired, with the For Him version featuring cardamom, mandarin, cedarwood, lavender and patchouli, and the For Her version built around green florals, lemon, jasmine, water lily and rose. The fragrance line remains relatively compact and focused, with clear positioning around outdoorsy, weather-ready themes.

Barbour markets most of its fragrances as For Him or For Her, but recent launches like the Origins line are explicitly presented as suitable for all genders, reflecting more flexible ideas about who can wear which scent. Distribution is mainly through Barbour’s own website, British fragrance chains and online discounters, keeping the line accessible to a broad audience rather than treating it as a separate luxury sub-brand.
