Anise Hyssop
Note Profile
About
Fresh, sweet licorice herb
Scent Profile
Anise hyssop smells of fresh, sweet licorice and aniseed, light and clear rather than heavy. A herbal fennel note runs beside the licorice. A soft green freshness and a gentle warmth sit underneath. It is sweet but not cloying, and it fades quickly as a top note.

-
Estragole anisic · phenolic · anise
Smell words come from published sources.
A given perfume with this note may use this material, or something else.
Origin
Anise hyssop is Agastache foeniculum, a herb of the mint family. It is neither anise nor hyssop. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops, and it is 80 to 95 percent methyl chavicol (estragole).
Usage in Perfumery
Natural and niche perfumers use it as a top note that adds sweetness and clarity. Aftelier says it blends with almost any other top note. Its strong licorice smell does not suit every taste, so it stays in artisanal and niche work.
