About

A sesquiterpene that occurs in chamomile, frankincense, opoponax and myrrh. It smells warm, sweet-spicy and balsamic. It is a quiet material used to round out and fix a base, not to lead one.

Scent Profile

Bisabolene smells warm and sweet-spicy, with a balsamic, amber-resin quality typical of opoponax. A gentler, woody note sits underneath, softer than cedar and less sharp than most woody materials. There is a faint sweetness throughout and a warm spice touch, closer to a quiet background note than a bold one. A soft herbal trace, reminiscent of chamomile, rounds it off.

Origin

Bisabolene is present in many essential oils rather than produced as a lead material. Givaudan sells it as a fragrance molecule under Giv code 2751503.

Usage in Perfumery

A base-note modifier. Givaudan lists it in reconstitutions of bergamot, myrrh and lemon oils, and calls it an excellent fixative for neroli bases. Its contribution is textural: warmth, softness and length.
