About

Ambertonic is an IFF captive molecule with a dry, deep amber-woody smell. A clear musky tone runs through it. Sweet, spicy and powdery touches sit at the edges. It is a base material of very long tenacity.

Scent Profile

Ambertonic smells of dry, deep amber and wood, rounded and warm rather than sharp. A clear musky tone runs through it. Sweet, balsamic and honeyed touches sit underneath, with a little warm spice and a soft powdery edge.

Origin

A synthetic captive of IFF. It is 7,7,8,9,9-pentamethyl-6,6a,7,8,9,9a-hexahydro-5H-cyclopenta[h]quinazoline, CAS 1392325-86-8, and the IFRA Transparency List carries that CAS and name. IFF patented the compound with a priority date of 15 February 2011. The patent makes it from Cashmeran, another IFF material. It reports the cis isomer as musky and the trans isomer as ambery. IFF showed the material in its 2022 Speed Smelling collection, reported by Nez.

Usage in Perfumery

A base note. It adds lasting warmth and blends with florals, spices and woods. It pairs well with sweet and gourmand material. In IFF's test perfumes it made floral and woody notes stronger and added a musky undertone. Nez reports IFF using it in a bread-crust accord with pyrazines and AmberXtreme, and in a vegetal, fruity and musky composition with Cashmeran.
