Ambertonic is an IFF captive. The one page that describes how it smells puts it in the amber register first. It is rich, warm, resinous and slightly sweet, with a smooth rounded shape and honey and balsam under it. Evidence for this note is thin. The maker's own olfactive description could not be reached, so the whole shape rests on one trade glossary page.

Scent Profile

Amber-resinous warmth leads and it is the one thing every source agrees on. It is rounded and balsamic rather than sharp. A moderate sweet vanillic body follows, which is what makes the material sit well against gourmand work. Honey and balsam sit alongside that sweetness. Small amounts of warm spice and of soft wood are named, though the source does not say which wood register it means. A musky trace is reported from the second source. An animalic reading is asserted only by the source's category heading and never by its running text, so it is held as a trace.

Origin

A synthetic captive of IFF. No CAS number and no molecular formula for Ambertonic was confirmed anywhere. IFF's own ingredient site returned HTTP 403 and the Wayback Machine holds no snapshot of an Ambertonic page there. IFF showed the material in its 2022 Speed Smelling collection, reported by Nez, in two compositions built with its other captives Cashmeran and AmberXtreme.

Usage in Perfumery

A base note. It adds lasting warmth and richness and blends with florals, spices and woods. The source describing it says it pairs particularly well with sweet and gourmand material, deepening it while grounding the lighter notes above. Nez reports IFF using it in a bread-crust accord with pyrazines and AmberXtreme, and in a vegetal, fruity and musky composition with Cashmeran.
