Balsamic, resinous notes
Resin has a balsamic, warm, and slightly sweet aroma with nuances that can range from pine-like and woody to ambered and smoky. Its scent often carries a sticky, enveloping quality that lingers and deepens over time. The olfactory character evolves from a fresh, sometimes green opening to a rich, dense drydown.
Resins are natural exudates collected from trees such as frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, and labdanum, typically harvested by making incisions in the bark. The raw material is then purified or solvent-extracted for use in perfumery. Each type of resin has its own geographic and botanical origin, contributing unique aromatic properties.
Perfumers use resin primarily as a base note to impart longevity, depth, and a balsamic warmth to compositions. It blends well with woods, spices, florals, and orientals, often forming the backbone of ambery and incense accords. Resins are valued for their fixative properties and ability to round out sharp edges in a fragrance.
Perfumers known for using Resin include Andy Tauer , Asad Ali Siddiki , John Stephen , Alberto Morillas , Christopher Sheldrake , and Rodrigo Flores-Roux .
