Cigar is the rolled, cured and aged tobacco leaf smelled as a whole object: leaf, wrapper and box together. It is drier and more serious than a sweetened tobacco note and keeps a real smoke facet, which the cured-leaf tobacco notes do not. Hermitage's Tuscan cigar absolute is the clearest single material behind it, and a verified buyer calls it 'the most realistic cigar-like absolute I've smelt, like dried out latakia leaves'.

Scent Profile

Cigar smells of dry, cured tobacco leaf with the wood and smoke of the box it sits in. A real smoky edge runs through it, closer to fire-cured latakia leaf than to a sweetened tobacco note. Dry spice and a faint nutty, gourmand warmth sit underneath, with pencil-shaving wood and a light leather undertone rounding out the base. It reads as serious and dry rather than sweet.

Origin

Hermitage Oils sells a Tuscan cigar absolute made from Kentucky-variety tobacco grown in Tuscany, the leaf behind the Sigaro Toscano. No manufacturer sells a material called simply 'cigar', so in most compositions the note is built as an accord: tobacco absolute for the leaf, cedarwood for the box, and a birch-tar or smoke material for the wrapper. That accord route matters, because it means two houses using 'cigar' may not be reaching for the same thing.

Usage in Perfumery

Used in the base of woody, leather and tobacco compositions, where it supplies a dry masculine anchor without the honeyed sweetness of a pipe-tobacco accord.
