Origin

Styrax is a natural resin obtained from the bark of trees in the Styrax genus, primarily Styrax benzoin and Styrax officinalis. The resin is collected by making incisions in the bark, after which it is purified and sometimes solvent-extracted for perfumery use.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use styrax mainly as a base note, valued for its fixative properties and its ability to round out and enrich amber, oriental, and chypre accords. It blends well with vanilla, labdanum, spices, and woods, and is often used to impart warmth and complexity.

Notable Perfumers

Perfumers known for using Styrax include Christopher Sheldrake , Alberto Morillas , Antoine Lie , Aliénor Massenet , Bruno Jovanovic , and Calice Becker .
