About

A fantasy gourmand accord. Caramel and burnt sugar carry it, a bright mandarin top sits over them and a soft orange-blossom facet runs through. It is a confectionery idea rather than an extract of a sweet.

Scent Profile

Bonbon smells of rich caramel and sweet burnt sugar at its centre. A bright, juicy mandarin sits on top, both fruity and citrus at once. A soft orange-blossom floral note runs through the middle, which keeps it from reading as plain caramel. A creamy, milky roundness and a faint honeyed warmth fill out the base, with a whisper of burnt-sugar smokiness at the edge.

Origin

Synthetic and assembled per house. Delacourte names the building blocks of the caramel part: ethyl maltol, maltol, sacrasol, coumarin and furaneol. Lactones supply the creamy body. No supplier sells a material called bonbon.

Usage in Perfumery

Three Fragrantica attestations under the Sweets and gourmand smells group. Popularised as a named note by Viktor and Rolf's Bonbon (2014). Used as a heart and base sweetener in gourmand work, where it does the job of caramel without reading only as caramel.
