A white tropical flower that smells of hot bread. Sources compare it to pandan leaf and to scorched rice more often than to any other flower, so the note reads as a warm baked sweetness with a soft floral behind it rather than as a floral with a gourmand accent.

Bread Flower smells like warm, toasted bread rather than a garden flower. A nutty, burnt rice grain note leads, close to a golden crust just out of the oven. Underneath is a sweet, yeasty Maillard note, malty rather than sugary. A soft, unfocused floral scent sits behind it, with a faint green note recalling pandan leaf.

Origin

The common name belongs to Vallaris glabra, a climbing vine of the Apocynaceae grown across Malaysia, Indonesia and southern Thailand. The Malaysia Biodiversity Information System, a government database, records its scent as 'a fragrant scent similar to pandan leaves mixed with burnt rice'. Two nursery sources say the same thing independently and one adds that the flowers are used to make perfume. The two framings in the evidence do not agree on what perfumers buy. Premiere Peau's trade glossary calls Bread Flower 'a fantasy concept note - not a specific botanical species', built from maltol, furfural, phenylacetic acid and light floral synthetics. That is a claim about supply, not about the plant. No natural extraction of Vallaris glabra was found on any supplier list.

Usage in Perfumery
