A constructed smoky-mineral accord named after the element. It evokes charcoal, graphite and hot metal. Elemental carbon has no smell of its own.

Carbon is a constructed note built to smell of charcoal, graphite and hot stone. The stony note comes first, with smoke close behind. A dry, earthy depth sits underneath, with the char of burnt wood. A faint burning-metal edge shows. It reads as burnt and stony rather than sweet or soft.

Origin
Not a material. Graphite and diamond are solid networks of carbon atoms. They do not evaporate, so they have no smell. Houses build a carbon accord from other materials. Ermenegildo Zegna builds its mineral carbon accord in XXX Charcoal with a graphite note, black pepper, elemi, saffron and Norlimbanol.
Usage in Perfumery
Rare and close to bespoke. Four perfumes list it, from 2000 to 2022: Cerruti Image Woman, Fueguia 1833 Equation, Ermenegildo Zegna XXX Charcoal and Sixteen92 Latrodectus Mactans. In Equation it is the tonic note, named Carbon Purificado, purified charcoal.
