About

Graphite is a cold mineral note. It smells of dry stone dust and chalk with a thin charred-wood smoke under it, and a metallic edge that reads as cool rather than sharp. A dry pencil-cedar woodiness sits behind the mineral. The material itself has no smell. Premiere Peau states plainly that pure graphite 'has virtually no odor' and that the pencil-lead impression people name comes from cedrene and cedrol, the cedarwood the pencil casing is made of. So this note is an accord a perfumer builds, not something extracted.

Scent Profile

Graphite smells of dry mineral dust and chalk, cool rather than sharp, with a rocky, metallic edge. A dry, cedar like wood runs behind it, the same wood a sharpened pencil carries. A chalky powderiness sits on the surface, and a subtle smokiness, like charred wood, shows through. Underneath is a damp, earthy note, close to soil after rain.

Graphite is crystalline carbon. It is not extracted and it is not distilled, because it has no odour to extract. Premiere Peau describes the note as a reconstruction built from metallic musks, vetiver for the pencil-shaving quality, and Iso E Super for diffusive mineral warmth. The pencil association is chemical rather than poetic: cedrene and cedrol from Juniperus virginiana give a sharpened pencil its smell, and the graphite core contributes nothing. Mad et Len built a fragrance called Graphite around the same idea, described by its retailer as 'the raw essence of chalk pencil being sharpened' and 'monochrome graphite, chalk palette and cropped wood'.
