Berlandiera lyrata, the chocolate daisy, is a North American wildflower with yellow rays around a maroon centre. Gardeners grow it for its cocoa smell, which is strongest in the morning and on warm days. Plucking the ray florets releases the odour, and the stamens taste of unsweetened chocolate. No oil or absolute of the plant is sold. Perfumers build the note from cocoa absolute, vanillin, linalool and a trace of green notes.

Usage in Perfumery

A cocoa note with a flower's name. Fragrantica lists it in 16 perfumes and Parfumo in 4, filed under Flowers. Most are floral or gourmand scents. It brings cocoa into a floral blend without the full weight of a chocolate accord. It reads lighter than the chocolate and dark-chocolate notes, which carry roasted and nutty facets.
