About

Choya nakh is the smoke of burnt seashells, caught in sandalwood oil. It smells of a fire that has reached the tideline: smoke first, then salt and iodine, then something animal underneath it. It is not an incense smoke. The burnt matter is shell and the protein inside the shell, so the smoke carries a marine and indolic edge that no resin smoke has.

Choya nakh smells like a fire that has reached the tideline: dry, burnt smoke first, then salt on the air. Underneath, an animal warmth builds rather than fades, close to something organic caught in the flame. A mineral tang of calcined shell runs through all of it, giving it a rock pool character rather than a resin smoke. A warm amber base and a creamy sandalwood floor sit underneath, carrying the smoke.

What is ScentArt?

Origin

Destructive, or dry, distillation of seashells in the Kannauj attar trade of northern India. Shells are roasted in a sealed clay or iron vessel until they char, and the smoke is condensed into a receiver charged with sandalwood oil. Choya is the process, not the material: choya loban is dry-distilled frankincense and choya ral is dry-distilled sal resin. The product is a dark, viscous, tarry oil. Nothing published gives its volatile composition. The trade attributes the animal edge to indole and pyrroles from the scorched shell protein, but that is asserted, not measured.

Usage in Perfumery

A base note and a fixative, dosed in drops. It is the traditional natural route to a smoky-marine effect, used where a clean synthetic marine reads as manufactured. It goes into attars, oud and dark-woody bases, and mineral-amber accords. It pairs with sandalwood, which is already in it, and with labdanum, oud and seaweed. Suppliers say the harsh smoke recedes with age and the amber-marine body deepens, so aged material is used differently from fresh.
