About

Terranol is a Symrise aroma molecule that smells of damp ground. The maker lists its odour as earthy, mossy, camphorous, patchouli and beetroot, in that order. It gives a fragrance the humid-earth side of patchouli and the root side of vetiver without being either material. A retailer who formulates with it describes a damp cave with water running through it, and uses it under a salt accord to supply wet stone rather than sea air.

Scent Profile

Earthy is the note. It is the first word on the Symrise sheet, the first word of the retailer's description, and the thing both sources return to: humid earth, patchouli's damp side, beetroot, a cave floor. Mossy_chypre is second on the manufacturer's own list and is corroborated twice more, by the sheet's line about the earthy part of green ground-growing moss and by the retailer's mossy earth with mushroom hints. Dry_woody carries the patchouli and vetiver-root character both sources name, and The Good Scents Company's descriptor list for the same CAS adds woody outright. Cooling_mentholic is the camphorous quality, third on the Symrise list and independently reported as bright camphor by the retailer. Mineral is wet stone, shaded tide pools and a rocky shoreline, which only the retailer describes, so it is set below the facets two sources share. Green comes from the sheet's ground-growing moss and from the green term on the TGSC list. Below the line, fruity is the dark fruitiness Symrise says the molecule reinforces, and it is held low because that is a claim about what it does to a formula rather than about how it smells alone. Amber_resinous is the lone balsamic term on the TGSC list. Nutty is the retailer's nutty vetiver. Aquatic_ozonic is the water in the cave, kept small because the same source says the material does not smell marine by itself. Sulphurous is a trace for the mushroom hint.

Origin

Terranol is synthetic. Symrise gives the chemistry as an alcohol, C15H26O, named 1,1,5,5-tetramethyl-octahydro-2,4a-methanonaphthalene-8a-ol, under CAS 57566-26-4 and 88644-30-8, and states plainly that it does not occur in nature. It ships as a solid. This repository already holds the molecule as material 88644-30-8, where The Good Scents Company lists it as balsamic, fir needle, green, mossy, patchouli and woody.

Usage in Perfumery

A base note. Symrise gives a recommended use level of 0.1 to 3 percent and a blotter tenacity running into months. It is used to build forest-floor, root and wet-stone effects, to extend patchouli and vetiver, and to make marine and mineral accords read as a damp place rather than as clean water.
